Our story starts back in July 1996 when we met for a BLIND DATE. We married only six months later and are still happily married today! We have raised our family on this farm as well as many types of livestock. We have tried it all from poultry to alpacas. Each year we expand on our quest to be more self-sufficient. For us, that means learning to grow our own food, make our own supplies and or products and sell our goods. It is not a quest for vast riches. It is simply the quest to enjoy a peaceful life.
Over the years we have had great successes and great losses. It is a part of farming. You take the good with the bad! We have had some pretty cool adventures though and that makes it all worth it! We have sold livestock to celebrities and sports figures. We have even our animals used in national ad campaigns, on multiple TV shows and in magazines. What a RIDE!
We have been breeding Nigerian Dwarf goats for almost 15 years. It started as a want from our youngest son Trevor and just snowballed.
These pint-sized goats are easy keepers who make a good amount of delicious creamy milk that we use in our skincare line. They are the farm comedy and natural weed control!
For us, they are "not just chickens". Sure, you can get your chicks from a hatchery, feed store or local chick flipper pretty cheap. But why support the puppy mills and factory farms of poultry?
At Ole Yankee Farm every chick sold is hatched on the farm and comes from parent stock that is living its best life. Quality over quantity! If that matters to you, reach out for your next set of chicks!
When we sold off the alpacas for sheep we wanted a dual-purpose animal in the pasture. We settled on the Shropshire after checking them out at the Livestock Conservatory website.
The first importation into the United States was in 1855 and by the 1920-30s the Shrop was the most popular sheep in the USA. Pretty cool. They are hardy, thrive in New England weather, and are fantastic moms.
Goat meat is one of the most consumed meats in the world. We kept getting calls for it, but raising dairy goats, it was just not something we did. We decided to test the market with a small meat herd.
It quickly changed from having just a commercial meat herd, to breeding and showing at ABGA shows. We love these gentle-natured goats!
At Ole Yankee Farm, we are still mastering our gardening craft. We plant mainly for ourselves and hope to in the future offer our extras or maybe started plants.
Right now we grow a few hundred heads of garlic, pumpkins for the livestock, an extensive herb garden, our vegis, loads of fruit trees and bushes! We expand each year and hope to be able to share with you soon!
Did you know that we have a separate brand where we sell things made on the farm? We call it The Clunky Chicken. We make a variety of skin care products, home decor made from cement, candles, and upcycled wood crafts.
In spring 2025 we will begin construction on a farm store and studio.
We will have a website coming soon that you can order from too!
Email or call us, and we will get back to you as soon as we can. We both have full time jobs in addition to tending to the farm animals so be patient, please.
